Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy helps people involved in a romantic relationship gain insight into their relationship, resolve conflict, and improve relationship satisfaction utilizing a variety of therapeutic interventions.

How couples therapy differs from individual therapy:

  • Treatment focuses on treating the relationship itself, rather than each individual separately.
  • Treatment is Solution-focused, with change-oriented interventions from the first session.

What to expect - Typically, the first session explores the history of the relationship, as well as each partner’s family-of-origin, values and what each wants to achieve in therapy. Sometimes the initial session may focus on crisis intervention and stabilizing the situation before delving into other issues.

Next, we will focus on identifying the issue that will be the focus of treatment, establishing treatment goals and planning a structure for treatment for each session.

During treatment, you will gain insight into the relational dynamics creating the problem and understanding about each person’s roles in the problematic interactions. This greater insight will help bring about change. You will often be assigned readings and exercises to apply the skills you have learned in therapy to day-to-day interactions.

Most couples come away from therapy with greater knowledge of their relational patterns and with the necessary skills to effectively communicate and problem-solve with their partners.
